Looking to hire an effective content specialist talented in creating written and visual content? If yes, consider traits and experience beyond the typical. To explain, I share what brought me into the field and why I might be the content specialist you seek.

Copywriters & Content Creators Are Storytellers by Nature
As a kid, I loved stories. Storybooks answered questions, taught lessons, and entertained. The images stirred my interest. The words appealed.
Dreaming and noticing everything, the world fascinated me. Colors. Facial expressions. Movement. Shapes. Behaviors. I payed attention to it all.

Even then, I was a storyteller with a love for visuals. Poetry was my play. Visual creativity was fun. I felt joy when my words and visuals made someone smile. I giggled with silly abandon when my tall tales prompted concern or surprise.
My parents taught me that giving gifts from the heart meant something to others. But I wasn’t always the best at choosing gifts. So instead, I shared my words and visual art.
Throughout life, I wrote poems, made greeting cards with words and design, and created expressive videos for everyone. These were my gifts to others. All my life, my content was open and vulnerable. I shared my true feelings and experiences.
Content Specialists Are Curious, Contemplative, and Observant
After a high school psychology class, I found intrigue in the human mind. What was the relationship between thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and behavior? What drew people together? What caused a divide?
These musings led me to pursue and obtain my Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience/Bio-psychology. I studied at Kenyon College, a school renowned for writing.
Kenyon expected students to prove their understanding of all material through written and spoken expression, regardless of the field. Even biology tests required essay-like answers proving knowledge of difficult concepts. As a result, my writing style fused fusion various disciplines.

Like the character Harry Potter, I exhibited similar characteristics of humility and a genuine dedication to work for noble purposes. My early life was tough, but at Kenyon, I experienced the magical.
I walked through farms and fields, swam in the Kokosing River, and meandered through the ancient cemetery. During all of this, I contemplated about life and what it means to be human.
Copywriters Express Twists and Turns From Experience
Then came graduate school. Money was tight. To pay for schooling, I worked as a Graduate Associate in design, media and technology.
Rumor had it, clinical work paid more than a creative career. As a result, my love for writing and design took a backseat to a long career in psychological work.
I don’t think I ever entertained the possibility of writing or designing for pay. It just wasn’t what people do, right? I lost my connection to art, design, and writing.
Then, well into my psychology career, everything changed.

Content Specialists Love to Make a Connection
I worked at a mental health center where clinicians empowered clients through relationships and creativity. These qualities became the hallmarks of my content.
The psychological approach at the center was innovative. The clinical work was so revolutionary that filmmakers featured it in two separate documentaries.
Though employed for clinical work, the director invited me to lead marketing efforts for the clinic. I created their online and offline media and promoted both documentaries filmed on site. For one film, I produced the press kit and designed the copy and visuals for its official movie poster.

Everything came full circle. My childhood nature to tell stories and create visuals to evoke emotion came alive.
I wasn’t confident in marketing at that mental health center. I may not have even been great at it. Yet, because of that opportunity, my voice and vision emerged.
All the while, I kept making those greeting cards. I wrote and designed silly ones, thought-provoking ones, and lots of ones that came from the heart. Looking back, I realize that the heart of my content was much like my clinical work and training. My content celebrated human connection.
Dedicated Content Creators Possess a “Fire in the Belly”
Hopeful of using the writing and marketing skills elsewhere, I spent my free time creating media campaigns. I focused on mental health advocacy. My work gained high sums of money for mental health foundations.
Thinking I might have some abilities in authoring and designing content, I entered a Digital Marketing program. My goal was to hone and practice skills in writing and design and to be effective. I’m still practicing and refining. Honestly, I’m not sure if I’ve got what it takes. Yet, I know a few things with certainty.

I crave to create. I’m driven to make use of my storytelling, my psychological work, and my love for relationships. I need to express what I’ve learned.
Why I Tell You My Story
I don't tell you my story only because I love to tell stories. This is not just "a story." It is the history of who I am, why I do what I do, and what gets me up every day.
When hiring a content specialist, ask them what why they do what they do. Ask them what drew them to the field. Find value in their purpose and history. Be convinced when there is authenticity.
This person will be the voice and vision for your company’s content. Your brand. Your influence. Your story.
You’ll know you’ve got the right person for the job.
If my story, my style, and my purpose appeal to you, I may be the content specialist you seek. If so, reach out. Together, we will make an impact.
